Matriculation

To matriculate as a student at the University of Graz

Registration will be processed by the Academic Affairs office

Go to the homepage of the Academic Affairs office for a complete list of forms, legal documents and verifications necessary for your application.

After the university approves your registration you will receive a student-ID number (Matrikelnummer) and a student account. If you plan to take courses/ lectures at a partner university in Graz (MUG, TUG) you should co-register at these universities. Please note that ECTS credits can only be awarded if you are co-registered at the university offering the course.

General Requirements for University Registration:

a) Bachelor- and Master degree certificates

  • transcripts for each degree (if possible with ECTS credits)
  • the masters transcript should verify whether a written thesis was positively evaluated in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements

b) Application for Enrollment

  •  additional requirements are described on page two of the linked document

 c) Registration for a Doctoral Program in Natural Sciences

Use this form to

  •  define a primary field of research and an elective subject
  • provide a short summary of proposed doctoral research
  • submit names and signatures of your proposed supervisor and chosen mentor (nominated faculty members should have the Habilitation degree and belong to the doctoral school)
  • obtain the signature of the head of the department
  • obtain the signature of the director of the doctoral school

d)   Evidence of Admission (EU/EEA applicants excluded)

(as required by the University Act 2002).

The Academic Affairs office provides a template for “Evidence of Admission“ (see b). Some countries and some universities do not comply with this format. In that case, your undergraduate university can provide evidence in a different written form as long as the following points are addressed:

  • Applicant’s complete name and date of birth
  • Official name of the degree awarded / completed Masters program  (e.g. Master in Biotechnology, University XY)
  • Confirmation that the qualifications of the applicant (completed Masters program) would be sufficient for the student to register for doctoral studies in the chosen field of study at the institution conferring the applicant’s Masters degree. The document should provide the name of the equivalent PhD program(s) at that institution, for which the applicant is qualified to study, (e.g., PhD in Biochemistry, University XY).
  • confirmation that the completed Masters program and PhD programs for which the applicant qualifies at the home institution are full time study programs  (time in years or ECTS credits)
  • the confirmation MUST include the academic year of eligibility for the applicant’s PhD studies at the home university. The year of eligibility must be the same as the student’s application to register at the University of Graz
  • Date of issue of the confirmation

Please note that ALL ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (transcripts, certificates, evidence of admission,..) have to be officially verified. If the original documents are not issued in German or English they have to be translated. The translations ALSO have to be legalized in the issuing country, or by an officially recognized translator in Austria!
