Rigorosum and final degree requirements

the Office of the Dean coordinates completion of the final degree requirements. Contact this office at least one month in advance of submitting your thesis.

When research is completed, the student writes the dissertation, which is then read by the advisor. A second reader, chosen by the student, evaluates the dissertation. Usually the second reader is a member of the student's thesis committee. Both reviewers should submit their evaluation to the Office of the Dean within 4 month after receiving the thesis, but latest 2 weeks before the proposed date for the thesis defense.

Three bound copies of the doctoral thesis must be submitted to the Office of the Dean at least 4 weeks before the proposed date for the thesis defense. Upon approval, the student gives a final public oral presentation of his or her research and defends the thesis before examiners (Rigorosum).

You will have to submit:

• 3 bound hardcover copies of your PhD thesis

• 4 printed abstracts in German and English (max 2000 characters incl. spaces)

• form for PhD- Assessment

Before submission of the thesis and the documents, the thesis has to be registered in UGonline. After submission the thesis will be assessed for plagiarism.  For details see the homepage of the office of the dean

Confidentiality: Restriction of publication

If the content of your thesis research needs to be kept confidential to protect patent applications or upcoming publication in the scientific literature, it is possible to suspend public release of your thesis for a maximum period of 5 years. This application should be submitted at least one week prior to your thesis submission. FORM
